Year of Harvest: 2009 Month Of Harvest.: December Time of Harvest: 9:00 AM Story and Comments.: I failed to score during archery season. Had deer within bow range ever time I was out. I had a perfect 15 yard broadside shot at a doe the first night I was out and decided to pass. Had doe within 15 yards of my stand multiple times but couldn't get a shot for various reason and only saw one buck, a small 3 point.
Riffle season wasn't shaping up to be much better. Didn't see a deer the first day. Well, except for a 135 class buck that I came across while putting on a drive. He had been deceased for a while though. Apparently hit by a car. I was able only able to get out for a few hours the first Saturday and only saw one deer, 100-125 yards away running through the woods.
The last Saturday of the season I didn't see anything until around 9:00 when I saw a doe come running in the woods behind me to my left. I lost her in some thick brush and when she reappeared she was behind me to my right at 25 yards but quickly bolted into the brush and headed out into a hay strip offering me no shot. A minute later i heard some more deer behind me and turned to my right to see this a big buck walking up the hill toward my stand. He angled into the thick brush and stopped but branches were covering his vitals. He took a few more steps into an area in which there was a small opening at 40 yards and BANG! I let the .270 bark. He took a few steps, stumbled a little and fell within 15 yards. He's a main frame ten with a small kicker on his right side and a split G1 on his left giving him 12 points. The left base is 6 1/8 around and the right is 5 3/4 around. He has an outside spread of 20 1/2. My taxidermist aged him at 4 1/2 or 5 1/2 years old. He's my biggest buck to date by far.
