Story and Comments.: After a full day of sleet and freezing rain, I thought the first day of the rifle season was a bust. I was hunting a heavy clear cut on top of a mountain I normally hunt (see other stories). The wind was 10-15 mph from the south east and I was stalking the entire morning, keeping the wind at my face. I headed back through the clear cut again for another stalk. I noticed a flash to my right and it had a rack on it. I quickly pulled my 300 win mag on him as he leaped toward me 80 yards away. He stopped facing me 77 yards away for 2 seconds and then turned sideways into the brush. I thought I should have taken the first shot. I watched pieces of the deer move through the THICK slashings away and down from me. I started to get that sick feeling that I should have taken the snap shot. My only consolation was the wind was blowing the right direction and he couldn't wind me. I knelt by a small pine and waited to see any movement in the slashings. After 10 long minutes I thought the buck got into the slashings and moved down and away to where I could never catch up to him. Just as I was going to follow him, I saw a flicker of a ear or tail 125yrd down deeper in the slashings. I couldn't believe he was still in there. I waited another 3 minutes catching glimpses of movements but never seeing the entire deer. He finally moved into one 8" hole I could just see his shoulder. I decided it was now or never. I took the shot and nailed him. I ended up dragging him 1 mile across and down the clear cut through the wet and mud to my truck. I didnt measure the spread but he is a very nice symetrical 8-point. His neck was thick and his hair was long and full. He should be a very nice mount.
