Year of Harvest: 2001 Time of Harvest: unknown Story and Comments.: After hunting the woodlot this morning I decided to leave my treestand and return for an evening hunt. At about 3:30 I settled in for the evening, and was wondering if the place I hunted as a child would give me one more chance. As the evening wore on there were only squirrels and chipmunks to keep me company. Shortly before dark I heard a deer snort up the ridge from me. I got out my grunt call and grunted several times to try to lure it into range. Within just a couple of minutes I caught movement to my left side, it was a large buck and he was heading my way. As he got within 30yards and passed behind a tree I pulled my bow to full draw. But as luck would have he stopped behind the tree and I had to hold at full draw, after about a minute and a half I was able to lower the bow as I couldn’t hold any longer. He stepped clear of the tree and I was able to place a clean shot into his shoulder. By the time I left the tree it was completely dark and although Blake and I both looked with flashlights we could not find my trophy. I could not sleep well and was wondering where my buck had gone. The next day as I decided to take Blake squirrel hunting and as we were walking through the woods I could not believe my eyes when I saw my buck lying there only 50 yards from where I shot him. My excitement level went sky high not only was it a nice buck but it was the largest one I ever killed and I did it with my bow. As Blake and I counted all nine of his points I couldn’t help thinking of how excited my dad was when we got to his 9-point nineteen years ago. Shooting an animal as beautiful as this stirs many emotions inside of you. There is joy, excitement, fulfillment and on the other side you feel bad because this animal was truly the prince of the woods and would have sired many more future buck. Well believe it or not rifle season for buck has been canceled for the third straight season. What a day both the kids win there soccer games and I got my trophy.
