Story and Comments.: This is the second buck that I have taken with my traditional equipment. It's the first I have taken with a bow that I built myself. I cut the Osage tree that I made the bow with a couple years ago, and finished making the bow last year. Last hunting season I found a really good funnel that I place a stand in. On 24 December at 0634 in the morning I managed to miss a really easy shot at a really nice buck. Right after that miss I popped a contact out of my eye and the wind blew it off of my hand. After the trip home to get another one and waist most of the day I sat in a different stand location and managed to miss another really nice buck. Both were the biggest that I had had the opportunity to shoot at. Both were simple shots, I think buck fever might have stepped in. Anyway I placed a stand in the same location of the first shot this season. I had the opportunity to sit it on the evening of the 6th. It was still a little early but I laid down a trail of Tinks 69 and it did the trick. About 2o minutes before sundown I heard a noise, looked towards it, and here comes this buck with his nose on the trail. I shot him at nine steps from my tree. He was slightly quartered towards me and the shot only got his left lung. The buck jumped and ran about 30 yards then stopped. I watched as he stood there for about 10 minutes. He then turned around 180 degrees, slowly crossed a small creek and made his way up the bank. It took about 15 minutes total for him to move out of my sight, and by that time it was dark. I knew it was a fatal shot but he was still moving so I got down and went home. My girlfriend and I went out later that night but did not find him. The next morning I had some people I worked with meet me and we started looking. When I found him I was stunned. I hadn't really looked at the size of him until then. It was totally great. My biggest buck and I did it with my self-bow. What a moment. After that I got stuck, got a HMMWV stuck trying to get me out(I'm in the Army), and had to get a Chevy to pull us both out. None of that is remembered though. Only the thought of this nice deer and a great hunt.
