Year of Harvest: 2002 Time of Harvest: 5:40 Story and Comments.: Hey check it out, I got lucky again.
Early this spring I was doing some scouting and found an area where all the saplings had been torn up. I mean literally, about 20 of them. Just to the north of this small stand of trees are two giant old oak trees, and between the big and little trees is a good trail. My plan, if I ever went back there to hunt was to build a small ground blind at the base of the trees. Anyway I went in there last week and the same group of trees are all torn up. On the night of the 18th I layed a trail of Tinks 69 and a little tarsel gland scent down the deer trail. I sat by the big trees on a stool and at 5:40 p.m. I heard a deer coming. It was this awesome buck that you see here. He came straight down the trail. At about 3 yards he stopped and looked at me. I was frozen. So frozen it took me a few seconds to realize that I was not breathing. The urge was too strong for the deer though, he started smelling the ground aga in looking for that elusive doe or the other buck invading his territory. He took a couple of steps and looked at me again. During this short period of time I was trying to figure out if I wanted to shoot him, knowing that would end my bowhunting season here. But as all these thoughts were running through my head this buck turned away from me and instincts took over, the bow was being drawn and the shot was away. At the same time this was happening the deer looked back towards me and was on the move before the arrow hit him. AT 5 YDS THIS DEER MOVED BEFORE THE ARROW GOT TO THE BOILER ROOM!! He ran out of sight. I went home, knowing it was going to be another long night. At sun up my friends and I were on his trail, and this was one tough deer to follow. He went about 500 yds, zig zagging all through the woods before he swam across Cache Creek and died in the woods on the other side. Aside from the shot, it was a perfect h unt; exactly how I planned it. This season has been awesome for me so far. What a year!!
