Story and Comments.: I've sent a pic of my mounted "lucky buck" as my wife calls him but there was no luck involved with harvesting this guy. I had first spotted him in early July that year. It was immediately apparent that he would be an exceptional animal. I became obsessed. His home area is a farm I have been hunting for the past 8 years. I knew the terrain and where the critters could be found. This patch of woods had does and fawns. That patch had bed areas. That patch is where the bachelors hung out. So I started going out daily in the evenings during the hottest weather knowing that the deer weren't going to move off there cool spot beds till the sun went down. I watched and videoed. I took some spectacular video of him and a decent 8 point. But this deer was huge. His body was half as big as any other deer in the area.
I practiced with my bow now even more than ever. I wanted to be ready fore that chance should it come. Finally the season is here and I love to hunt the first week before the rut starts and the deer are somewhat predictable. I had Saturday then Monday Tuesday and Wednesday to try to track this guy down.
Saturday was weird day. I had fawns all morning and had set in my mind that if a fat doe came by I would take her. Towards midday I decided to give up and sneak the long way back home.(hunting grounds are within walking distance) As I approached a field a large doe and her fawn were coming right at me. When she got broadside I drew back and my grunt call came out of my pocket and fell in front of my string. AHHHH! She spotted me, blasted a snort and trotted off. Oh well no big lose.
Monday and Tuesday gave me no shooting opportunities but I saw lots deer The Lucky Buck, I had not seen in a week and a half. Wednesday came and the morning was dead. In this area you're either on em or they are no where to be found.
After an early supper I decided to go into an area I had stayed out of all week. It is a good deer spot although I rarely see bucks in this area. I set up my stand(seat), I do 75% of my hunting from the ground, and waited. One hour passed then two. I'm starting to play head games with myself. Maybe I should have gone up to the Oak flats. Maybe I should have tried that fresh scrap line I found yesterday.
With about a half hour of hunt time left, off to my right I hear that familiar crunch crunch crunch. I, by instinct, wheel around and assume the position. I can see legs of a deer meandinging towards me in the heavy brush. It's going to hit that trail that will lead it broadside right by me and into the cornfield. This will give me a 20 yard shot. Then I see a glimpse of the headgear and my heart jumps into my mouth and I have to swallow hard. There is no time to think about this within seconds he is on me and I'm at full draw. Just step out from behind that tree. Come on what's keeping you. Suddenly from my right runs a spotted fawn right up to the buck to touch noses. I think that the doe with the fawn has me busted. Nope. The buck takes 2 steps and turns the oppesite way to look back and I let my arrow fly. It hit true to mark and I heard him about 50 yds out. I've heard this crash often and knew right away he lay there. As I walked up and saw what I had done I again had to swallow hard to contain my thumping heart from comong out of chest. I had to call for help to get him out of the woods He weighed in at 232lbs(farmer has a scale). He filled the back end of my friends S-10 pickup. His gross antler score is 133 7/8". I'm not an antler hunter but this is a deer of a local boys dreams.
