Year of Harvest: 2007 Month Of Harvest.: December Time of Harvest: 4:00 PM Story and Comments.: Several shots from neighboring hunters shattered the afternoon silence and the anticipation of deer on the move began to build. The sun was setting on what was thought to be another unsuccessful yet relaxing day in the woods when I noticed the haunch of a deer behind some pine trees about 50 yards to the left of my stand. The deer began to head my direction but there was a large tree between myself and the deer that obscured my view. Within seconds I noticed antlers on both sides of the tree that concealed the body of the deer as he headed straight for me. My heart rate went from 60 to 160 in a nanosecond as I readied the smoke pole. As the deer crept into my shooting lane he paused and took a step backwards as if to know he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. With quick thanks to my creator I ignited the 100 grains of powder and sent the 240 Grain Sabot on its way. When the smoke cleared the buck was gone and I was left wondering if I had blown my once in a lifetime opportunity. To my relief, the buck's final dash only covered about 40 yards before this Monarch of the north woods exhaled his last breath. Green score puts this bruiser in the mid to upper 160's. Perhaps not the biggest buck in the woods, but I would not trade him or the memory of the hunt for anything!
