Story and Comments.: It was early Saturday morning 11/9/02. It was a rather warm morning. My brother John and I left at 5:45 to go to our stands, we were running a little behind. John was going to give me a ride on his four wheeler to my stand and then he had to drive to his. He dropped me off about a quarter mile from my stand and I headed down the old path. I was setup right before daylight and was anxious for the day to start. I was trying scents for the first time. I had some West Wind White Tails doe in heat "P" I didn't know if it would help or not but I was willing to try it. As the night turned to day I started buck grunting, doe bleating and fawn bleating. A flock of turkeys came out of the roost behind me, they where close enough for me to hear them but to far away see. The wind started to pick up and swirl. I decided to try a few fawn bleats because I was having no luck with the grunts and doe bleats. As I sat there a heard something walking off to my right side, I knew it a deer. I looked over and seen it walking on the other side of a beech thicket, BUCK I said to myself not knowing really how big it was. I knew the deer was better than the new PA antler law. I stood up and pulled back before he came out of the thicket and waited for that sure shot. I never looked at his antlers again. As the buck came out on a steady pace he stopped 16 yards. I knew I had a clear shot so I let the arrow fly. Smack, the arrow was right on target and the buck took off. I watched where he ran so I knew where to start looking. About 30 sec after I shot I heard a crash. I started shaking and was so excited. All I kept think was "I wish John was here" I know a lot of people say you should wait a good hour before you go after your buck, so I waited 4 minutes that felt like 4 hours and got down. I walked to where he was standing when I shot and seen blood right away. As I slowly followed his running marks in the leaves I heard a noise in front of me; the buck was down and was trying to get up. All I could see was antlers!!! I couldn't believe it. I was shaking so bad and was scared he was going to get up. I kneed down and watched him; soon I couldn't see him anymore. "Where did he go?" I kept saying to myself. After waiting for 10 minutes and started walking to where he was. The Buck was still there he just was laying in a dip. I couldn't believe my eyes. I walked up and lifted up his antlers and counted nine. I let out a great big yahoo. As I field dressed the buck I couldn't wait to find John. Everyone has a hero in life and John is my hero. I would have never been interested in archery if it wasn't for him and I surely wouldn't know even a third of what I know because of him. Thank you big bro for all you have done.
