Story and Comments.: It was Saturday the 11th of October of 2003 at 4:30pm when I settled into my stand on the ridge top about 10 yards from a good rub. The weather was very warm and the woods were very noisy with nut hunters running wildly through the woods. At 4:45pm I saw my first group of deer browsing on the bench below. The lead doe was good size so I was anticipating shooting her if the shot presented itself. This group of doe slowly worked their way up the hillside towards me. Another deer shot up the hill onto the bench but due to the thickness of the terrain below I was unable to see the deer. It was now 5:30 and one of the young does had moved up the hill and was standing behind me. I was afraid that this young doe may see me at some point and give my position away. The lead doe was now twenty yards away so I drew on her. All I needed was for her to make 2-3 more steps forward and that was when something caught my attention. I could see a buck standing 75 yards down the hill in the underbrush. He looked like he could possibly be a shooter. He made his way up the hill towards the lead doe. He was almost in position for a 30 yard shot that I was not comfortable taking when he grunted and chased two of the does into some heavy cover. Meanwhile that young doe was still hangin around my stand making me very nervous about moving around. 5-10 minutes went by and the two does the buck chased exploded out of the cover. I was eagerly waiting for the buck to follow but he wasn't coming. The does regrouped on the ridgetop about twenty yards away. Another doe ran up the hill from the bench and the group of does on the ridgetop scattered. I assumed they thought the buck was coming after them again. I was watching this new doe thinking that I may take a shot at her when I saw antler in the underbrush. He slowly made his way through a strip of thick cover that ends on the ridgetop 10 yards behind my stand. I knew that I would have little time to make the shot and that it would be difficult. So I got into position with both feet half off the edge of my stand so I could shoot around the tree and I waited. It was now 6:00pm and I could now see his antler as he was exiting out of the underbrush. I drew on him, counted 5 points on the one side and was impressed by his mass. He came out of the underbrush so quick that I had made the shot before I could even think about it. He ran up on top turned around to see what had happened and fell over dead. Thanks to my Mathews Featherlight, Beman ICS camo hunter arrows and my Muzzy 100gr. broadheads, I have shot another wallhanger the second year in a row.
