Why is it that there is a section called Best Deer Gun , and nobody talks much about guns.

It's the same question over and over. What caliber is the best and what is the best gun to buy my lil kid for his first year.

As much as I like hunting. I see more and more people that are not willing to even buy a gun or a scope. They get a gun given to them by one of their relatives and are not willing to spend a dime to improve it. Not even to buy a gun cleaning kit and some patches.

People make the same mistakes over and over. Either the scope mounts are not up to par , or the scope is not up to par. Or the shooter throws the gun in a corner or under the bed or back in the gun rack and doesn't even clean it properly. Takes it out the day before hunting season and can't hit the broad side of a barn with it. Goes out in the woods with a $40 box of shells and thinks he is RAMBO.

Even if the fool manages to hit one. He thinks he is the great white hunter. Then at the end of the season throws the gun back where it has been for the last 10 years and talks about buying a new gun or a new scope - then Christmas , Easter, Memorial Day, 4th of July , Labor Day and Thanksgiving passes and all he ever did was talk.

I try to bring up some good subject's here and nobody replies.

Guns aren't a big concern of mine. Almost any modern day rifle will shoot sufficiently to take down a white-tail at moderate yardages. People worry about ballistics too much when in reality many aren't good enough to take shots at distances where ballistics matter, or they aren't even able to see the far distances where ballistics would matter. Spending a little time at the range to find the right bullet for the gun and sighting it in is about all you need. For people who hunt out West where far shots are common, I think guns are much more important than in the Midwest and East where shots are limited by cover.

I bought both guns that I use for hunting. No one gave them too me. One is a Mossberg 500, has a cantilever rifled barrel that I have a Bushnell trophy 1.75-4X scope, that covers my deer hunting where rifles aren't allowed. I also have a 28" vent rib barrel for that gun. That covers all my turkey, waterfowl, upland, trap shooting.

My rifle is a Browning A-bolt Hunter classic in a .270. I put a Leupold Vari-X II 3-9x scope on there.

both guns shoot great, I have my ammo picked out that shoot good out of them, and I clean them properly before and after hunting season (and then also during if they get shot a lot, and after target shooting).

I didnt buy my deer rifle, but I did work for it. I have a Howa (made by Tikka) in .243 caliber, with a Simmons 3X9-40 sccope. I have shot 5 deer with it and it does the job everytime. I shoot Winchester Supreme Ballistic Tips in 95 grain. My gun with those bullets will shoot about 1" groups at 100 yards, thats fine for me. People think that a .243 is underpowered, but if you can shoot it really doesnt matter. I took a mule deer last year in Montana at 200 yards and it dropped him dead in his tracks.

I dont see the point in using a 300 mag or something along those lines for deer, like younghunter said any modern day rifle is sufficient for deer.

Thats really good. I'm proud of the both of you.

A .300 Win Mag isn't the only gun I have. But it was the first and only new Rifle I ever bought.

I mainly hunt with one of the 30 / 06's in the woods and one of the .270's in the open.

With all the guns that I have had in the past. Each of them did something well. It wasn't until the day that I tried to shoot 300 yards at a monster buck down in Distant PA with a .35 Remington that I realized that I could have shot that deer easily with my 30 / 06. I Just took that gun to work with me because if someone stole it - I wasn't out much.

But after going back for 3 days to look for that buck I decided that it wouldn't ever happen again.

If I get my health better this year I plan on making a trip to Colorado next year for Mule Deer and Elk. A once in a life time event for me. Something that I dreamed about since I was 6 years old and reading books like Shots at Whitetails by Jack O Connor....

.300 win mag, this is a great topic, i do take care of my guns and clean them after every time their fired. i like my 30-06 Remington, but i also love my uncles 30-30 winchester which i harvest a doe with, a few years ago. those idiots that you bring up is why i hated the idea of getting a doe during rifle season

Today at Grice Gun Shop I showed my brother all the 760 Game Masters on the rack. There is probably 20 of them used guns on the rack right now. Out of the 20, 18 of them are 30/06's. Out of the 20, 19 of them were severely abused.

If them guns could talk , imagine the stories they could tell. Most of them were ruined because they were kept someplace in the damp - like in the gun case they bought to transport the gun to the hunting camp or range when it was new. Half of them were missing the scope.

Did you ever notice that most people will get rid of a 30/06 but not a .270? I think that people think that a .270 is some kind of magical gun that will out shoot a 30/06. Like all you said - it isn't the gun it is who is shooting it. There has never been any difference in price between the two.

.

that right there is the main reason I baught a new rifle instead of a used one. I never feel confident about anything used, there are only a couple things that I would want to venture out and buy used such as cars and stuff like that, but when I was loking for a rifle, I decided the best thing for me is to get a brand new gun. But I didnt have $700 to spend on a high class rifle, hence that led me to the Remington Model 710 and I got it in the 30-06 load because that is what I liked best. I dont ever plan on selling this gun EVER. It shoots great and I am in love with it.

When one of my younger friends bought a new gun two years ago at Bob's Army & Navy - it was a 710 Remington 30/06 with a Bushnell scope.

The accuracy lies in the barrel and the action - not how the stock and finish look.

I was only ever took with one gun - a .300 Weatherby mag. Probably because the guy stole the good scope off it and the scope mount was busted. By the time I replaced everything - I had more into it than what it was worth.

From now on - when some guy sits in my driveway talking on his cell phone and waiting for it to get dark - and not bringing any shells - so I cannot take a few test shots - I won't buy it, along with acting dumb telling me that it was his fathers gun and he didn't know anything about it.

I know that he was at every gun shop for 60 miles. Most all of them tell you no obsolete or military firearms.
When nobody else would offer him anything for the gun he came to me and acted stupid. I give everybody the benefit of the doubt. But I called him a few days later and all of a sudden he knew everything there was to know about a Weatherby Rifle and even admitted that he wouldn't have sold it to me if it was worth something.

A new 710 Remington is as good as a gun as you can buy for under $400

1st bought a 7mm Mag - Bought with the idea if I every went big game hunting. Turn out to be way to big for PA Whitetails. To much damage to the deer.

2nd Won a 300 Winchester traded it for a 270 - Very nice cal. for hunting deer. Shoots very flat, very accurate over a distance and plenty of knock down power.

I have also used an 30 odd 6. Liked the distance and traj. of the 270 better.

I grew up in Pa but now live in Colorado. I still hunt for the first few days of rifle season in Pa with my dad, uncle, and brothers. I just bought a Ruger M77 in 300 winchester short mag. I put on it a Burris Fullfield II 3-9 scope. I have yet to shoot it because I thought why sight it in to just have to resight it after the flight. I am anxious to see how it shoots especially at longer distances.

A good gun case would go a long way to keeping the accuracy. Along with marking your gun case - handle with care. Some baggage handlers are hunters too.

I would recommend bringing two extra boxes of shells with you. Depending on where they live - and how far away from a Dick's Sporting Goods store you are - you might have trouble finding ammo the night before deer season with that caliber.
