I have a Buckmasters bow, single cam,63# draw wgt,(will max @ 70) 28" draw lgth, 29.5" gold tip 5575, 125 gr field tip. When I shoot thru my chrony it shows 226 fps. I thought it would be faster> Should I increase distance from chrony ( 3ft) or is it likely that is the real speed? Thanks for any ideas, GH.

Greyhunter,

That's about right. The buckmaster series of bows like the G2 are an older manufactured bow, I believe at least ten years old. And weren't acceiving the higher speeds back then. If you want to speed it up a little you could always decrease the arrow weight, because you are probably getting close to 7 grains per inch on those arrows. But for hunting arrows, in my opinion, that is about perfect.

I agree with Lonescout. Dont let arrow speed fool you, Put that heavy arrow in the boiler room and they will go down just as fast as a 300fps arrow.

The only benefit to a faster arrow is they shoot flatter and shortens the distance between your yardage pins. Most archery shots are taken at 20 yards or less so that benefit doesnt account for much. Set your draw weight to were it is comfortable for you. If 70 is too much leave it were it is because it will only amount for a few feet per second in the long run. Shooting lighter arrows will help gain speed but will hurt you in the kinetic energy area of penetrating an animal if they are too light. Id stick with the heavier ones.

Thanks for the replies, I only practice out to 30 yds as most of my deer kills have been 20 and under. Had a Martin Lynx dual cam which I gave to my daughters fiance, That shot 236 with axis arrows and blew thru deer. Must be my imagination as this bow seems faster, but will recheck both again . Anyway loaded with thunderhead 125s I have plenty of confidence it will do the job. Thanks again, GH
