Haven't been on the site in awhile due to work but I started getting the itch a few weeks ago and got back on and started reading the threads again. I've had a pretty good season so far. Let me first say I'm in a management program, however my area is a SMALL piece of township property behind a housing plan that borders a chunk of land that a few guys i've learned hunt smart and hard. I was required to harvest 2 does before I can harvest a buck. I've only been able to get out 5-6 times since the beginning of the season due to work. I have taken my 2 does a couple weeks ago along with another I hit low but never found (which i'm still sick and upset about) I have figured there were roughly 7-9 does running the property that I see consistently, minus the 2 or 3 I have harvested. Today was the first day I was able to get out when it's been colder. Wasn't able to get out this morning had a meeting this morning. Got up into the stand (new location) around 1230 could only hunt til 230. As always i'm walking in and jump a few does, they usually wander around me throughout the time I'm in the stand but they didn't do it this time. It was about 145 and i'm going through my sequence of grunts/rattle/bleats, I sat back down for a minute and finally saw something running down the other side of the hill. As I'm watching/glassing trying to determine if it's the 10000 squirrels running around in the leaves or deer, another group of does comes HAULING down the hill towards me. I continue to look and it's 5 does. Thinking there HAS to be something pushing them, then a small 3 pt comes down as i'm thinking "just my luck" then an alot better buck came down following him. Not sure how many points but definately at least 8, very wide about 3 inches outside each ear, just didn't have great mass. He ran the 3 pt off chased the does around for a few minutes and headed back up the hill. He wouldn't respond to any grunts/rattles/bleats at all. A couple does bedded down for a few minutes before a high narrow 4 pt came down and started chasing them again. Didn't see the bigger buck again, I think there is a bigger buck hanging around but a good couple hours I could make it out. Will be out again tomorrow and saturday morning lookin for them again! |

I left work early on thursday got up in time to do a little scouting and hang my climber. Walked out the ridgetop of Ant Hill (our nickname for the ridge), and started seeing scrapes. My buddy Trev said there were at least 20 scrapes going out Ant Hill the previous week. All of these hadn't been worked, there were 3 massive active scrapes, along my walk out. I got the end, where the ridge fades into the valley and noticed a hemlock that looked like it had been through a shredder. This stopped me from further exploring, and I set up about 40 yards off the scrape line next to a patch of thick hemlock. I sat for all but an hour friday, and did not see a single deer, however about 15 minutes till last light, I heard a deep crisp grunt. I bleated but the buck would not come into view. Today I got out on stand just before daybreak, I set up my doe decoy and hung a key wick doused with estrous urine nearby. At around 7:15 my attention was drawn to a series of quick excited grunts as this buck smelled the wick. I bleated twice and he came running in. Although only a 5pt, I got 5 1/2 minutes of video of him before I snort wheezed to scare him off. Later at around 9:30 I heard a deer coming in, I saw bone and knew he was the pig that had been making the large scrapes. The bleated, grunted, and everything else I could do to turn him to no avail. He stayed about 80 yards out and on a mission into the clear cut. Although his rack was not real high or wide at around 16 or 17 inside, he had good mass. The most impressive thing about this deer was his body. The buck I shot on this property last year weighed 220 live weight, and the buck I saw today would have dwarfed him in body size. On another note Trev saw a 6 point working scrapes he didn't shoot, he said he didn't know if his brows were long enough. I said THANK GOODNESS, LET EM GROW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ![antlers [antlers]](images/smiles/antlers.gif) |

Friday I was sick with the whitetail flu, and with the only cure consisting of a tree stand, bow and arrow I headed into the woods. I had only been in the tree a short while when I saw a nice buck coming through the trees. I grunted at him and he slowed down but never came close enough, after he passed I rattled but he still continued on his way. His rack looked funny almost as if he was missing a side, the side I saw was at least 3 points and pretty heavy. I think if it was a half rack I would like to see the guy that claimed the other side. Shortly after the deer passed I saw a doe coming in, she paused in an opening broadside at about 30, 35 yds. I decided to pass on the shot. She didn't seem to be in a hurry, she then angled closer to my tree slowly feeding on the acorns, when she got behind my tree I turned around hoping for a quartering away shot. Well she stopped just short of the opening, turned back around and headed back the way she came, but she was closer this time. I readjusted in my stand and when she stepped into the opening at about 12 yds I drew the bow, placed my pin behind her front shoulder and released. I'm not sure what happened with the arrow, but I hit her right behind the back legs. ![sad3 [sad3]](images/smiles/sad3.gif) As I watched her leave I saw blood running down the side of her leg. With some optimism and a lot of disappointment I waited. I shot her at 2:30 so i waited till 3:45 to see if i could find the blood. I found some blood and my arrow. I marked the blood trail and went to the truck. Just before dark I picked up the trail again, determined to find her before the coyotes. I tracked her into the brush where I started seeing a lot of blood. I found her shortly after only about 150 yds. from the impact site. With a sigh of relief and the work just beginning we got her gutted and out of the woods. I am using the Rage 2 bladed broad heads and even with a bad shot on my part they did amazing. |

Still havent seen anything. Can't firgue out what the hell I'm doing wrong. I'm in sitting in a mass of oaks. Sat there on Saturday, however didn't get out till 10 am because my lazy butt slept in. Lots of rubs and fresh scapes. However the adjoining fields to my hollow had hunters all day shooting at pheasants. Thats probably a good reason I didn't see anything. Haven't been able to make it out in the mornings at all. Anyhow, I just picked up a rattle bag the other day and still reading and watching videsos on how to use it. Never tried to rattle before so it will be a new experience. Going to try it out Tuesday morning..Going to be too warm tommorrow here in SW PA after work ![Crying or Very sad [Crying or Very sad]](images/smiles/icon_cry.gif) . Going to stay home and get so work done. Good luck everyone and stay safe... |
