I took some pictures of old photos we have hanging around hunting camp. These are from when some folks consider to be the "good 'ol days". But what were good days for some, were not for others. These are from an area in the eastern end of Mifflin county in the Bald Eagle SF. Anyone else have old pics from this unit? ..... Zimm, ARfan, Zark... ddr713, you have a distant relative in both of those photo's.

This one is from 1944.

And this one is from about 1960 +/- 3 years, based on the faces I see or don't see.

Those old open sighted, lever action rifles probably produced a lot more shooting than harvesting back in the day.

Well in the top photo from 1944, it says the center guy kneeling is Gillie Crissman, which was probably your dad's cousin I'm guessing. The guy to the right of him you may have also known, it's Bill Rager, who used to be the asst. principal / director at the vo-tech school. He passed on about 4 years or so ago.

In the colored pic, your dad's cousins boy, my uncle, that we spoke about is either the first or third in from the left, kneeling, I believe. There's a few folks from Milroy in there.

Thanks,

1944 was a little before I started hunting, I have hunted down Rt. 192 since 1953 we have a few old pictures and many newer but it has been private land since about 1939.

I did not know Gillie, do you have the names of all in the 1944 picture and where is the early log book of the camp? The man on the left leaning against a tree looks like Sam Spagnoletti who owned the Black Horse in Reedsville?

Yes, for that picture it had names on it.
In the back:
Frank Schaaf - Ralph Phillips - Stewart Rager - Pat DeMarrow
Front row:
Willis Henry - Bud Leidich - Luther Brock - Bill Rager
Kneeling:
Win Rager - Max Rager - Gillie Crissman - William Rager - Dan Rager

Funny you mention the Blackhorse. My great grandfather started that bar back in the late 20's - early 30's. He bought the old Morrison hotel and renovated it into a bakery, restaurant, ice cream parlor, and bar. He loved horses and put a wooden black horse outside of it, hence the name. Ever heard of Hugo Gottschalk? Quite an interesting fellow as I've been finding out thru some research on him. He was an inventor and one of his inventions was the continuous bread baking oven. He had two other bakeries, one in Burnham and one in Mifflin, that he eventually sold to the Beaver Bros. I was able to locate the base of one of his brick ovens in the basement of the Mifflin site. They were 2 story brick ovens.
