Well done Dave. I applaud you for showing your son what sound management is and can be. Harvest what you need, not what you can. Lots of guys fill every tag they can, regardless of whether they whill use it or not. Its like sitting a bowl of candy in front of a kid and telling him to only eat one piece. I shot a big (275 pounds) buck in Canada this year. I had a PA doe tag, but passed up some very easy shots at does and smaller bucks because I didnt need it. If a mature buck had come by.....that would have been a different story.
I dont blame the hunters entirely, nor do I blame the game commission entirely. We as a collective group put ourselves in this situation. It crack me up how we have armchair experts on both sides of the debate now, and it evolves mostly from where they hunt. If they see a lot of deer, like on private ground or urban ares, there are too many deer and poor habitat. Conversely if they dont see any deer, there are too many deer being harvested and there is nothing wrong with the habitat.
The way I see it is the management units are too big, and the PGC's management program is too much of an all encompassing approach. AR is perhaps the best thing the PGC has ever done, while the HR has gone a bit too far in some locations. I expect things to level out in the coming years, just as the coyote population has subsided in my area with the reduction in the herd. I hope everything works out for the best, hunting is far too important of a tradition to have it burn out because of mismanagement by both the hunters and those in charge.
We have a great group of hunters here, and many of you have the same
concerns as I do.
Where are the deer?
Where are the Hunters?
I really believe that we as avid hunters, must take matters into our
own hands.
The hunters are few and far in-between and the deer
are nowhere to be found.
Some of you must have some ideas on what we can do.
Lets not just ride this out, lets do something about it!!
I harvested an 8 point buck this year in archery. If I wasn't pretty
skilled at finding deer in my area and very lucky I would of fell
short this season.
Now for a young and upcoming hunter, they have little chance
at harvesting a deer with a bow or a gun.
Whats to keep them interested if the don't see any deer.
I could go on and on but I want to hear what you think.
Am I wrong?
or
Do you feel the same way I do?
Hi I have looked at your site this am, great btw! and then somehow ended up over here and saw this post, I see it was started in 2004 and am just currious if things have gotten better or worse since then? My husband and I started up 3 live cams in our woods to see what was back there, because we thought the place was pretty well hunted out. and had 3 really nice bucks show up this spring, came around for a few weeks and left again. We have also noted that the deer (especially the does with fawns) tend to head towards the house sometimes, which leads to private land this direction. To the south there is a lot of paper mill, dirt pit & and some state land that way. Not sure where the deer are most of the time. Because they come and go. Most the land back there is rented out now to hunters, and the state cleared the 40 back there and let the dirt movers, (LOL trying to avoid names of companys new here, so don't know if company names are allowed?) in so will be interesting to see if many hunters get back there this year. last year was pretty quiet, just with the 40 cleared.
Like you I am concerned, we used to have 15 acres, and we literally lived off it. We had huge gardens up front by the house, a swamp that we got to bring in geese & ducks, and loads of nice bucks, grouse etc. Our kids loved it, our son got two deer the first morning, his first hunt! Have to tell that story sometime! And now we want to help the Grandchildren learn to live from the land. Is that still possible?
It's like the worlds gone topsy turvey! We set up those 3 live cams been trying to do that since the 80's got them up by broadcasting them on the net. Thought it was pretty cool, so we took off the passwords, then wow, we get like every kind in there, from tree huggers (who get upset, when an owl comes into the cams for super) to trigger happy hunters, that come in and write pow, pow pow all across the chats! Its crazy!
So like you I ponder those questions from time to time. I was trying to find the latest news on what I could do as a house wife, with some time on her hands, and an internet connection. If anyone has a link with some good ideas or want to post a few, feel free to do so, so I can check into it. Thanks!
