It is obvious that most the members here are fed up with the deer managment in PA. Gary Alt and his plan are just not what we need, nor what we're looking for.
Isnt it OUR deer herd? Arent WE the ones that fund the PGC? Shouldnt we have a say in what goes on? Shouldnt we be able to elect who manages our deer herd?
Have the candidates give a presentation and then hold an election. This is just a shot in the dark, but what do you think?

Yep, that's what I've said for a long time but it will never happen because the PGC & gov't wont let it happen.

We are the tax paying License buying citizens of this state.
We should be able to make the commissioners positions become an elected one.

"It is obvious that most the members here are fed up with the deer managment in PA."
I wouldn't say that's obvious. I would say most here are okay with it but have issue's with the amount of reduction that's taking place. Most of the people that are complaining, are complaining about the amount of deer they had seen this year, being down from the previous couple of years. They feel the reduction has gone too far, but don't mind some reduction.

" Gary Alt and his plan are just not what we need, nor what we're looking for. "
Again, I differ. I think most are for a scientific quality management based plan. Gary Alt is irrelavent. Most biologist I believe would do a real similar plan. One bad year of hunting is not reason to abandon a plan. Nothing is black and white in deer management, there are too many variables. Scientific conclusions are based on several years of data to see the trend and aleviate any flukes. You would not sight in your rifle based on one shot would you? (I hope not)

"Isnt it OUR deer herd?"
NO, it is not. They belong to all the people of the commonwealth. Like it or not, it's a hard pill to swallow that others have a say. Put yourself in the shoes of a non hunting farmer.

" Arent WE the ones that fund the PGC?"
Not fully. I don't have a copy of the budget in front of me (it's always in the Jan. Game News), but I believe hunting license revenues provide about half of the funding.

"Shouldnt we have a say in what goes on?"
We do. Write to your commissioner or speak at a quarterly meeting.

" Shouldnt we be able to elect who manages our deer herd?"
No. Could you imagine the problems that would create. Not to mention the campaigning! (you think there's politics now...)Those positions should not be based on popular vote, but rather on their resume and experience. Most hunters have no idea what it takes to be a good biologist, compared to a bad biologist.

Like I said, it was just a shot in the dark. Renegade- I now understand the complications of holding an election, thank you. But who really does decide who runs the show?

Commissioners are appointed by the Guv and confirmed by the Senate. Some Governors take a great interest in the process, to others it is just politics. Some Senators also take great interest and others don't care quite as much. Generally there are trades - I'll confirm so-and-so if Sen. X gets the new bridge he wants. Politics, politics.....

State government has little control over an agency like the PGC. If action is what is desired, then the commisioners are the target you want to zero in on.

LOL about zeroing in on the commisioners , like they give a rats what we think, go to the meetings & speak while they sit there & snooze when your done they will do what they had allready made their minds up to do.

Politics = bad is what I'm hearing, correct? Who votes for our elected officials? They get re-elected two ways:
1. they're perceived as good at representing their constituents
2. we have an apathetic and uninformed populace

There is politics in almost every facet of our lives.
As I took a shower this morning I thought about the this concept - DEP regulates how clean my water is and where the wastewater goes, the PUC regulates the electric used to heat my water, the gas in my car is taxed to fix the roads, the price of a drink after work is impacted by the Liquor Control Board and so on.

But of course I play at the marble playground we call the Capitol and may have a different perspective than most people.

ummm Neville: Scroll up 3 posts to your post & tell me what the last two words are that you printed!!! Hint(politics, politics)
Politics = bad (your statement -not mine), well usually if politics & politicians gets involved nothing good comes out of it , but there are those rare occasions, but I live in the real world so I to may have a different perspective on it also.
