ALMOST 670,000 hunters, i guess the 1 million hunter plateau we were use too in this state will soon be a 1/2 million hunters. the out of stater's are gone, so i hope the timber industry was worth the absolute disregard for our traditions. THANKS DCNR AND GOOD BYE FAT EDDIE!!!!!!!!!!! [onpot]

I just saw on msn.com PA has the most deer vs. car collisions in the country. I find that hard to believe after the past couple years. But it caught my attention, thought I'd share and spark some debate.

If that is the case, then penn-dot is doing one heck of a job on roadside cleanup. They must also be cleaning up the dead carcasses
in nighttime re-con. I haven't seen a single dead deer on my 12 mile drive in over a year. I haven't ever seen penn-dot either. [eyeing]

I used to see dead deer all the time along 321. Not any more.

Ive been talking to my buddy in South central PA. Once again bad news as far as deer numbers on public land. He hunts harder then anyone i know. So i told him to get down here in Virginia and try some public land. He called me today and told me he just got done scouting some Natuional forests in Virginia and there was big buck sign everywhere. I told him to get his licesesne and start hunting.

I'm telling you people that hunt Public land in PA..Your chances are very slim...Try another state and see the difference..its like night and day.

Ill post his picture of his big buck once he gets em. [Razz]

The wk. end of Oct. 7th I went to my hunting spot in Cameron Co. it is a 185 mile trip one way from Lancaster Co. I didn't see one road kill deer on the way up and two on the way back, I guess the deer are getting road smart. I did see one nice buck while hunting but not close enough for a shot, he was the only live deer I saw the whole week end. [Sad 11]

I've noticed the same thing John between Erie and Philly and Erie and St. Marys .

This whole tree hugger , regeneration , save the environment , "The sky is falling" scenerio reminds me a lot of the "Scientific Hoopala " of the Oil Shortage of the mid-seventies . For those of you that weren't around when gasoline was 34 cents a gallon , we supposedly only had enough oil reserves to last the world another 10 years ! People waited in lines to get gas on odd or even days , businesses shut down ; energy costs soared . Now , 30 years later they're still pumping it out of the ground at record rates ; ; gasoline is @ $2.34/gal . Now I understand that oil is a non-renwable resource and some day it will run out ; but it goes to show how inaccurate our scientific facts , figures , theories and predictions can be .

Timber , is a renewable resource ; it's all about profit margins . Trees need cut down to allow the sunlight to reach the forest floor to get regeneration , that would flood the market with logs and drop timber prices . Instead we shoot off all the deer .There is just no money to be made from the deer on your land .

That Downhill Spiral Sound I talk about all the time...just turned into a HUGE SUCKING SOUND. Better hold on Boys cause it's gettin kinda hard to hold on to anything. The PGC is flushing the Tradition of PA Deer Hunting away.

ahh yea, and as far as seeing road kills.... I travel at least 33 miles one way , every day to work. This is from Blair to Huntingdon county. Over the past year I can honestly say that I saw one road kill doe. I dont really think she was was killed by a car. I think she commited Suicide from the loneliness she was feeling due from lack of her fellow commrades. [greentoung]

The PGC has unfortunately pushed me away from hunting PA...I now spend my $ and time in other states..The hunting is much better...Time spent in the woods is more productive.

That article said that there were 628,000 license sales by Septeber 30. There was still about two months till the opening day of rifle season at that point, and there are alot of people who wait for the last minute to get their licenses. So we may have reached the one million mark by November 27.

Numbers are down but I'm not really worried because I think with the game commision lowering doe allocations that the population will come back and so will the hunters. What really concerns me is that the number of junior hunters is down.

Thats the real problem. Kids are not hunting. Everybody can say that it because of video games, cell phones, and busy life styles but it because they won't see deer. And if everybody is honest the same would hold true for some of us.

We need to start to look through the eyes of a 12-18 year old. When I was twelve I hunted with my father in Centre County and we saw the deer 40-50 a day. By seeing that many you were always on the edge and into the hunt. If I was a thirteen years old now, I don't know how much I would stick it out. Now in my life it is not so much about the killing as the entire experiance. I am lucky to be able to hunt some good private land. I really just enjoy the great outdoors and being in the moment. I am starting to ramble so I will quit and no I don't see the road kills I used to.

everybody loves to blame the insurance company's. I've defiantly seen alot less road kill this year and I've traveled back and forth from Philly to Mansfield 5 times since opening day. the big culprit is the dcnr and the forest certification.Michael DiBerardinis a rendell crony and a vivid bird watcher has a say in who gets appointed to the pgc and deer management. the pgc has listen to this anti deer buthole while our legislators did nothing. now our almighty politicians are holding the pgc hostage over the increase because we the hunters are UN happy with deer hunting. the pgc needs an increase in hunting license and if the politicians want an out for the increase they should declare the dcnr ineligible for dmap tags and put the state forest under pgc control. eliminate the ridge created dcnr and appoint a few older retired folks who hunt, to the pgc board.

I hate to burst your bubble"Kid" ' , license sales have dropped every year since 1998 from 811,895 to 695,118 in 2005 ; to expect that great of an increase in sales in that short of time while looking at the writing on the walli s totally unrealistic !

Actually the number of "junior" licenses are slightly UP! From 98,233 in 1998 to 101,913 in 2005 . They question is are we retaining the "youth" or are new kids replacing the ones that loses inerest and drop out each year , then again ; will we retain them when they become adults and worldly responsibilities replace free time.

......and , I don't believe overall there was an overall decrease in the number of antlerless tags issued state wide , but possibly in certain counties only ; I think there was an overall INCREASE . I could be wrong on that one ' I couldn't access the figures on that ; I'm going from memory . Maybe some of the others can supply specifics on that .

It's not totally unrealistic to expect license sales to go up in the two months because it happened last year. The article in the Patriot News said "By Sept. 30, license issuing agents across the state had reported 628,077 licenses sold, compared to 661,059 on the same date last year." And on the game commissions website it said that there were 964,158 total license sales heres the link. I'm not denying that license sales are down and I'm not saying it's a good thing, but the situation isn't as bad as it looks.
