The 07' buck looked to be 3.5 to 4.5 according to tooth wear and the 08' buck was 4.5 plus according to tooth wear.

Very difficult to age them..takes a trained eye..We have been saving jawbones for 20 plus years and its still difficult to age them.

Seems October 20th was fairly significant in buck movement( First frost)..I received an alarming amount of calls that morning of big buck sightings....This is our first daylight pic of a buck and it was Oct 20th...

How old do you think he is? My guess is he's about 1.5 years old. Maybe 2.5 years old.

Quick story: I blew it this morning. I got to my tree at 0630. By 0640 I was set up and began to climb. As soon as I began to climb, I heard something run off. Sounded like a deer. I began to climb again. As soon as I reached my goal, I began to pull up my bow which had my rattling antlers attached to it. They bumped together and I immediately got a hard snort and a few stomps coming from behind me at about 25 yards. I stopped moving and heard him moving around as he was eating acorns. Now I'm 15 minutes from light. I can still hear this deer eating behind me. Instead of simply knocking an arrow and standing by for a possible shot. I had to get completely set up. When I removed my quiver from my bow, it made a noise which was apparently loud enough to scare the deer, because he got out of there immediately.
I've been in this same spot 3 times over the past week and have seen the same 2 buck coming through about 0645 am. They were a little early this morning. Looks like I gotta get up a half hour earlier, huh?

Earlier the better!! For me, I love slipping into the woods in the cover of darkness. The buck that I shot this year I was set up in my climber at 530am, shot him at 7am. It can make a difference between success and failure. When I was younger I would go into the woods 45 minutes before shooting light, I saw a lot less deer. Good luck this season [thumbup] IMO try not to over hunt a location, (treestand burnout) try to mix it up a little [antlers]

Yep, I would say it is picking up. The number of bucks getting killed on the roads has really picked up the past couple days. That is a pretty sure sign the rut is picking up-tempo.

Had interesting read the other day in Deer and Deer hunting in which a well respected Biologist who follows the moon cycle predicted higher than normal deer activity starting around the 20th of Oct and lasting about a week or so. He then predicted a trickle rut for this year in which chasing, rutting activity will be sporadic until later in November.

He predicted a peak rut to fall around Thanksgiving week. Don't be at all surprised if you see bucks actually chasing does(not just runnin' from hunters) the first day of rifle or calling pulls in a buck for you. Should be interesting to see if his prediction continues to follow on schedule. Because of our season set-up, the last week in Oct. and first week in Nov. would be our best bet. However, this warm weather combined with "other" recent hunting pressure will probably keep the big boys laid up for a little bit during the day.

My plan is to start hitting it hard later this week as a cold front is moving in and should really have the deer on their feet. Next week (first week of Nov.) I'll be out nearly every day. IMO, If you haven't burned yourself out already, the next week and half to two weeks will be the time to be in the woods.

Nice deer. But where are the big bucks? None of your Ohio buck pic. come close to the buck i seen last week in Pa. Perhaps Ohio needs to look into AR. [bugeyes]
