One of about 10 buddies I know who hunt down here in west Virginia.

Here is Kill #1...Just about all 10 will kill bucks this season ..some will kill 2...If you compare the 10 or so friends I have in PA..there will be no comparison..watch the difference...Ill start showing all the bucks they kill...No Antler restrictions....Watch...Its amazing. [thumbup]

I don't mean to criticize a harvest, but because of your arrogance, I have no shame in what I'm about to say.

That buck looks like a very big yearling. Look at the mass, no thicker than my fingers. Now, I'm not claiming to know the actual age by the picture alone, but surely the buck is no older than 2 1/2 years old. I don't think this one helps your point Ghost. We all know you have success in other states, but that buck right there is either a very nice yearling which is a product of excellent nutrition, or a very poor racked 2 1/2. I'm siding with the yearling, judging by the mass, the way the rack sits, and the looks of the face. The snout looks young and short like a yearling.

YH..

It was aged at 2.5 years of age..He scores about app. 105 inches..For West Virginia and its poor soil..that is a good buck..Remeber YH..Glaciated soil does not occur till about the middle portion of Ohio and west. Most Glaciated soil Bucks can reach 130 inches at 2.5 years of age..3.5 years of age can reach 160 inches. YH..you have got to educate yourself on glaciated soils and what that means to soil conditions..once you understand this concept you will beable to learn about deer and how they are a direct result of soil conditions. I have faith you will learn this as you become more educated as a hunter..keep inquiring ..because this will help you understand. So..your question was a good question..dont feel like you cant ask questions around here. [thumbup]

Also..West Virginia allows for hunters to kill 3 bucks...Most guys that hunt down here take a good 2.5 year old early in the season and then try for the older deer later on in gun season and some of them wait for a good older buck in bow season and then take a good 2.5 year old in Gun season..its all up to each individual hunter.

The point is..The guys that I know hunt Publucland(Not all)..and most of them are succssful year after year...Its quite amazing

you're so condescending...

and quite frankly, you're full of b/s. That deer does not top 100 inches...

Secondly, based on prior convictions, I doubt that you are even being truthful about someone aging the deer as 2 1/2. Again, I'm not saying that deer is a yearling for sure, but based on what I see in the picture, it raises doubt. I agree a deer like that is a 2 1/2 on average, but look at features that indicate age.

By the way, thank you for educating me on glaciated soils. I've learned all I need to know. You're a life saver.

...had a little spare time tonight. Figured you missed me and needed someone to keep you on your toes [talker]

Ghost,
I want to start by saying that this is not a smart a$$ comment/question -

So the problem with the bucks in Pennsylvania is the soil? Then why so down on the PGC and AR? What do they have to do with what kind of non-glaciated soil PA has?

Soil has nothing to do with age classes..But YH 's comment was why is the bucks antler base such a small diameter...So..thats how that was started. My point is..Why are the 10 guys I know down here so much more succsful then the 10 guys I know in PA..My poor buddy is haveing a terrible time just getting a doe on the Buchanon state forest...What is going on? What has happened? My buddy nis an accomplished hunter with 25 years of experience cannot acheive success..and its been 4 years. Now..there could be many factors..but its a continuous pattern Ive noticed since Ive moved down here..I still keep intouch with lots of PA hunters...Its just something Ive noticed.

OK. Got it.

Well I for one have been seeing more and more deer, especially this year. Just this past Saturday I was surrounded by 10-12 bodies right at first light. A spike came by about 30 minutes later, and at 8:15 I missed a medium 6-point. I can't remember the last time I saw that many deer in one day. I truly believe we are coming out of a bad cycle in PA deer hunting, and the best days are still to come (at least in the last 10 years). Can't wait for 2 weeks when I go back up north. In the mean time I'll be tryng my luck locally in Montgomery County for a nice corn-fed brute.

So ghost, please tell us more about glaciated soils and it's effects on deer. I'm anxious to see how far that foot goes in your mouth.

Hey Ghost. Congratulations on recognizing soil types, particularly glaciated vs. non-glaciated soils and their affect on antler mass. This is a big step!

I would have you take another look at that soils map of Ohio though.

Today is a good day [Love Pabucks]

nice yearling [Wink]

Is that one from Private or Public land? Not that it matters to me, just curious. Do you have an age or weight?
