I went out to the gamelands nearby on Monday night and noticed a big fresh pile of bear poo on the grassy access road near the corner of a field....maybe 150 yards from the parking lot. Then on Tuesday night as I was headed back to the parking lot in the dark, using a red headlamp, I heard a noise just off the side of the access road that passes through some super thick hemlock and pickers. I stopped and looked toward the noise in the dark....and saw a red dot, maybe 7 feet high...ish... I thought it was a reflective tack, but then it turned into two. I noticed right away that it definitely wasn't a deer because of the height....and the eyes were a little closer together. Then I saw another one about 2 feet off the ground. Whatever it was, was just 10 yards away from me in the cover. I stood still for a few seconds and then heard what I thought was popping teeth. I let out a soft "Whoa bear..." and it immediately charged me! It came within just a few feet of me, then headed away for a few yards, crashing like a herd of moose through the thick cover! I've never encountered a bear before, except from a car, and had no idea what to do....it was right on me in less than a second when it charged, and I knew it didn't run far. I just walked as quickly as I could to the parking lot, which was only 100 yards away, calling out "Hey bear.....Whoa bear....." all the way back.

Scared the heck outta me! I'm getting ready to head back out there now.....gonna carry two maglites and talk to myself all the way back to the truck tonight. So much for a discreet exit! I can't believe this season..... [bigeyes00]

Thats a crazy story to tell your kids. I had bumped a bear a few seasons ago while archery hunting up in the pocconos and never want to do it without a gun again. Most of the time they will run away, but if you suprise them watch out. [bigeyes00]

close encounters of the bear kind are scary. i don't know how good a gun would of done in that situation but i have a permit to carry and always carry while archery hunting. glad everything worked out and good luck the rest of your season

I'm glad to hear others carry firearms while archery hunting. I thought I was some quack. Except I carry to protect myself from the two legged predators in addition to the large furry four legged kind. Hmmm. I still may be a quack....

I was hunting in AK several years ago. My buddy and I were walking along side a thicket and next thing we knew we had ran right into a 400lb black bear! Thankfully his reaction was the same as ours...SCARED! The bare ran one way and we went the other! Good thing he wasn't hungry!

My encounter was in the dark, and I was walking quietly on a grass access road....so because I surprised it, I think it postured a little bit. Had it been daylight or if I was a little louder and had given it a little warning, I'm sure I never would have even known it was there. I was in my spot 2 days ago, hunting from the ground, and I saw another bear quietly moving through the woods. It was a biggun! This one was at least 100 yards away from me....no way to tell if it was the same one, but I suspect it was. The night I got charged though, there were at least 2 of them. I didn't see any cubs on Tuesday.

I talk softly to myself now on my walks out of the woods in the dark.
