Well that is a concern and has been for quite a few years, irrelevant of the deer program. The average age of hunters is around the 50 year old mark and we are due for a mass reduction of hunters due to old age, health, death, or injury. This is why they've started several programs to garner youth interest such as the youth seasons for junior hunters and the mentored youth hunts. It's also the reason for the old antler restrictions to remain for junior hunters.
The number of junior hunters is at 86,628. The mentored youth program added an additional 28,542 kids able to try out hunting. We have several statewide clubs who worked hard to get that program in place.
The entire nation is losing young hunters due to the many more opportunities for recreation they have nowadays, compared to 20 years ago. This is why it's even more important to not promote a poor attitude about hunting to the kids, with comments comparing the "good old days" to the current ones. This is another illustration of how clubs like the usp are dividing hunters and driving some away with their perpetual negativity.
