Instead of sueing, they should have put their efforts into another state like we did..Since 07' we have killed 7 bucks over 140 inches on publicland from another state. we have never looked back. What occured in PA has been an absolute blesing to us..Its expanded our horizons to greener pastures. [thumbup]

Mountaineer, What are you going to do if the midwest states start HR and AR? Could happen. I recently herd Indiana is getting serious about HR. Ohio may be next. Yep, deer managers allover the nation like the positive changes that have occurred in Pa!
You may eventually decide Pa has greener pastures. [antlers]

You guys have to realize that i still work in PA(Forestry consultant)...Ive been keeping my eye on PA ever since i stopped hunting it...Im still not enticed or convinced to spend any serious amount of time hunting PA...Trust me..if i thought it was worth while i wouldnt be driving 5 hours to another state's publicland to hunt. [Razz]

Arfan..

The check station i check my bucks in will have 200 to 300 pictures of bucks that were checked from the surrounding area for the season..Most bucks will score over 140 inches..upwards to 220"'s...PA may produce a buck like that on a per county basis. States that would adopt PA policies would only degrade the hunting quality..Trust me..Ive just about seen it all( great thing about getting Old)l and I wouldnt model any type of deer management after PA's. Ohio hunters killed a higher % of 1.5 year old bucks then Pa hunters did. Do most of their 1.5 year old buck score 140"?

Mountaineer is right about this in the sense that more trophy size bucks are killed in Ohio than Pa.

Where we disagree is that Pa has improved from what it once was in producing larger bucks.

As the record books show for my first statement they also show for the second one.

In comparing ANY state with Pa one must include many factors to quantify the comparison. For simple example: nutritional value of available food, number of hunters and hunter attitudes.

Pa is capable of producing quality bucks but a lack of nutrition will adversly effect mature bucks from reaching antler inches comparable to midwest states in many areas.

Hunter numbers are higher in Pa and the pressure on bucks doesn't allow a higher number of them to get old enough to produce large racks. We would need to flood the deer population with a higher proportion of older bucks for more of them reach trophy status and this is difficult with the amount of pressure on them.

Finally, hunter attitudes appear somewhat different in midwest states in that a higher percentage of a smaller number of hunters will pass on younger bucks. A majority of Pa hunters don't recognize the full potential of how big a rack a mature buck can produce even in the worst of habitat areas. Generally speaking, hunters here are happy with legal sized bucks and if they kill something bigger (even 2.5 yr. old) it's a gift that they think is an oddity. Rather than passing on this same buck(like midwest) to "flood" the population with older bucks.

Prime example of this: my dad's biggest buck is a 7pt. that score's less than 100". He visited recently and seeing my step-sons mounted 100" eight point from 2009 he asked if the buck I saw with my boy the first day (2010) was bigger. I said "heck yea by quite a bit", he just stared at me like I was from outer space. He hasn't seen many truly big bucks to say the least and just think, he was looking at a nice 2.5 yr. old buck not a mature one!! To my dad and many Pa hunters something bigger is mostly a pipedream when in reality it's very possible today.

For Pa to come close to comparing with midwest states, AR standards would need to be more restrictive and force hunters to allow more 2.5 yr. olds to reach 3.5 OR have a buck tag draw system which would limit the number of bucks taken in each unit.

Your right Buckman, in-order to have more older buck in Pa, the Mountaineer type hunters need to kill a doe for their meat supply, instead of 1.5 year old bucks. [eyeing]

Like i said before..In order to find areas of good hunting in PA..One has to hunt Privateland or find publicland thats not being obliterated by HR..Good publicland spots are either being fed by Privateland thats not being hunted much or by areas that are so remote HR is not hurting the quality of hunting. The common denominator with good hunting is some kind of protection

You may want to give deer some credit for being good at avoiding humans, especially in public forest land, more-so if they live to at-least 2.5.

Horse puckey! Most of the area of my district is public land with easy access yet hunters are harvesting plenty of bucks better than any of the pictures you have posted.

That is nice buck but really isn’t anything special compared to the bucks I have been checking. I have checked many, many bucks bigger than the one in your picture the past few years. I guess I am going to have to remember to take more pictures next year.

Here are just a few of the local bucks that beat the one in your picture. If I could get the pictures out of the local newspaper onto here there would be many more bucks better than your picture.
